On average 3 to 12 months. Shedding often begins around 3 months after childbirth, peaks for several weeks, and gradually slows as hormone levels stabilise and the normal hair growth cycle resumes.
During pregnancy, higher oestrogen levels keep more hairs in the growth phase, which is why hair often grows longer and feels thicker and fuller. After delivery, hormone levels drop rapidly. This signals many hairs to shift into the resting phase. When those resting hairs shed a few months later, the volume of hair loss can feel sudden and alarming. This process is called Postpartum Telogen Effluvium.
Postpartum shedding usually affects the entire scalp evenly rather than forming bald patches. The follicles remain healthy and capable of regrowth, so permanent baldness does not occur from this condition alone. As the body recovers from pregnancy and delivery, the hair cycle gradually normalises and new hairs begin growing. Post partum hair loss in most cases is self-correcting and require no additional treatment.
However, several factors can influence how long shedding lasts. Low iron levels after birth, thyroid imbalance, high stress, disrupted sleep, rapid weight changes, starting a new diet and restarting hormonal contraception can prolong shedding. When these factors are present, recovery may take closer to the upper end of the typical timeframe.
Supportive care includes gentle scalp hygiene, adequate protein intake, iron optimisation, ensuring all vitamins and minerals are at optimal levels, stress reduction, and minimising harsh styling practices. Tight hairstyles, heavy heat exposure, and aggressive brushing should be avoided while hair is fragile.
If shedding continues beyond 12 months, becomes progressively worse, or leads to visible thinning, professional assessment is recommended. A Trichologist can evaluate scalp health, review hormonal and nutritional factors, and determine whether an underlying issue is extending the shedding cycle post pregnancy. Early assessment provides clarity and supports faster stabilisation and regrowth.
Postpartum shedding that persists beyond 12 months may require professional assessment. Book a hair consultation at our Brighton clinic.
