Hormones and Yeast. When oil production becomes excessive or when oil is not cleansed away effectively, the scalp can feel greasy, heavy, itchy, or congested. This imbalance often develops from a combination of internal and external factors.
Hormones specifically androgens play a major role in regulating oil production. Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce oil on the scalp. During puberty, pregnancy, stress, hormonal fluctuations, or conditions such as PCOS, these glands can become overactive. This leads to increased oil on the scalp and can create an environment that encourages yeast overgrowth. The yeast responsible is called Malassezia globosa.
Product buildup is another common contributor. Heavy conditioners, oils, dry shampoos, styling products, and infrequent washing can trap oil and debris on the scalp. This disrupts the scalp barrier, and can trigger and oily scalp, itching, flaking, or scalp sensitivity over time.
Washing habits also influence oil balance. It is usually recommended to wash your scalp every second day. Not washing your hair allows oil and sweat to accumulate, while over washing with harsh shampoos can strip the scalp and trigger rebound oil production as the skin tries to protect itself. For most people, cleansing approximately every second day supports balanced oil control.
Environmental factors such as heat, humidity, sweating, helmets, and hats can increase oil production and trap moisture against the scalp. Which is the perfect environment for yeast to live in. Diet, stress levels, gut health, and sleep quality also influence how the scalp regulates oil.
An oily scalp is not just a cosmetic issue. Persistent oil imbalance can contribute to dandruff, follicle inflammation, odour, and hair shedding if left unmanaged. An assessment by the Trichologist helps identify whether oil production is hormonally driven, product related or inflammatory allowing targeted care rather than guesswork.
If your scalp becomes greasy within hours, it may be a sign of imbalance rather than hygiene. Our clinic in Brighton diagnose the root cause and guide you toward long-term control.
